This website is the virtual home of Dr. Barry
Whitney's "THINKING
ABOUT GOD" and "PEACE WITH GOD" Resources. Dr. Whitney
has been Professor of Christian Studies and Religion and
Culture at the University of Windsor since 1976, having
completed an Honours B.A. in both Religion and English
Literature (Carleton University, 1971), and a Ph.D.
in Christian Theology and Philosophy of Religion (McMaster
University, 1977). [His B.A. focused on Biblical Studies,
Christian Theology and Philosophy of Religion, as well
as English literature (Shakespere, Romantic poety, Novels,
Drama, etc.), and Philosophy. His Ph.D. focused on contemporary
Christian Theology and Philosophy of Religion (since Kant),
with a minor degree in Buddhist Studies).]
Before he began an extended leave in 2007,
several thousands of students had enrolled in his courses
on "God and Evil," "Justifying Religious Beliefs," "God
and Atheism," "Religion and Culture," and several other
courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels over
the past 30 years.
Dr. Whitney taught more than 165 courses at the University
of Windsor on a wide range of themes and issues in Christian
Theology and Philosophy of Religion. Some of these course
included the following: Faith and Reason,
Justifying Religious Beliefs, God's Existence, the Problem
of Evil and Suffering, Religion and Literature, Religion
and Science, Process Studies, and course discussion about
Miracles, Natural Theology, Life after Death, Religious
Experience, and Biblical Studies, etc. Dr. Whitney taught
courses and led discussions on issues like Atheism, Secular
Humanism, Scientific and Philosophical Naturalism,
New Age Spiritualities, Cults, World Religions and Western
Metaphysical Spiritualities.
Dr. Whitney has focused his research on "The
Problem of God and Evil'. He has written several books
and dozens of book chapters, academic articles and reviews,
and given several interviews on this important theological
(and deeply personal) issue. His book, THEODICY:
AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON THE PROBLEM OF GOD AND EVIL
(New
York: Garland Publications, 1993), revised and expanded
for a new edition (Bowling Green State University Press:
Philosophy Documentation Center) in 1998, has been the
essential resource for scholars working in the field. No
longer available, this book is the only definitive biblipgraphy
on the problem of evil. It covered more than 4,000 publications
from 1960 to 1991. Dr. Whitney's other publications on
the problem of evil include the "Evil" and "Theodicy" entries
in the NEW
CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA (Catholic
U of America/Gale Group, 2002), the popular book, WHAT
ARE THEY SAYING ABOUT GOD AND EVIL? (New
York: Paulist Press, 1989), the entry on "The
Problem of Evil" in
the NEW WESTMINSTER DICTIONARY OF
CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY (John
Knox / Westminster Press, 2011), EVIL
AND THE PROCESS GOD (New York/Toronto:
Edwin Mellen Press, 1985) and the opening chapter in THE
BIG ARGUMENT (Strand:
Australia, 2005 and Master Books, USA, 2006).
Dr. Whitney was Editor of PROCESS
STUDIES an international academic journal, from 1996
to 2009, publishing 28 issues (volume 23 to 38).
Besides his own books, some
of his major writings on the problem of evil (and related
theological issues) , are published as articles in academic
journals, including THE
